The former Coventry Airport at Baginton closed in June 2026 and is being redeveloped for battery manufacturing as Greenpower Park.
Coventry Airport opened in 1936 as Baginton Aerodrome, on land the city council had decided to use for a civil airport in 1933. It served general aviation, flight training and commercial flights and was a fighter station, RAF Baginton, in the Second World War. In 1982 Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there before a crowd of about 350,000.
Flights ended on 9 May 2026 and the airport closed for good on 11 June 2026. Development has begun to turn the site into a car battery gigafactory.
In April 2026 Warwick District Council granted detailed planning permission for seven manufacturing buildings, from 69,000 sq ft to 1.5 million sq ft and 4.8 million sq ft in all, adding detail to the outline permission of 2022. In September 2026 the council said it would prepare a new hybrid application to widen the permitted uses to advanced manufacturing, engineering and research and development while keeping the option of a gigafactory. A power upgrade is due in 2027, starting at 30MVA and rising to 50MVA after 2030.
The scheme is called Greenpower Park, a public and private joint venture between Coventry City Council and Rigby Group. Its stated aim is a £2.5 billion centre of excellence for battery technology, advanced manufacturing and clean energy. The council has said there is clear market demand and that it is talking to a number of companies interested in moving on to the site, most of that demand coming from the electric car industry.
The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre stands next to the site, about half a mile east of the junction of the A46 and A45. The Midland Air Museum is on its northern boundary. That puts it within easy reach of Jaguar Land Rover at Whitley and the rest of the city's engineering base.
Humber Hub is about 3 miles by road from the former airport site, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 4 miles and Sullivan Heights about 5 miles. Humber Hub has four bedrooms and free off-road parking for site vehicles. Stoke Lodge and Stoke House sleep nine each for enabling-works crews who want to stay together.

Excellent host.
Great place for a short stay. Quiet area, property exactly as described, spot clean, check-in extremely easy. Host was very friendly and checked in on our 2nd day.
The place was fantastic, the bed was clean and orderly, cozy and comfortable, and we loved the cupcakes left on the table. Perfect for anyone new to Coventry for business or fun.
