The area

About Willenhall

Willenhall lies in the south-east of Coventry next to Binley, Ernesford Grange and Whitley. It covers the ground bounded by the Rugby to Coventry railway, the River Sowe and the city boundary with Warwickshire. It runs into the smaller Stonehouse estate, Toll Bar End and Willenhall Wood.

It began as a small village that the growing city absorbed. Willenhall became a civil parish in 1866 and was merged into Coventry and Baginton on 1 April 1932, when it had 348 residents. During the Second World War the Chace National Service Hostel was built here to house munitions workers. Council housing followed after the war.

The parish church of St John the Divine was designed by Basil Spence and consecrated in 1957. Spence used it as a trial run for his work on Coventry Cathedral, which makes the church a small piece of the city's post-war story worth a look.

To the south-east there are nine hectares of woodland at Willenhall Wood, now a designated nature reserve. The area is part of the Binley and Willenhall ward, which had 16,991 residents at the 2011 census. It sits within the Coventry South parliamentary constituency.

Humber Hub is about 2 miles by road from Willenhall, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 2 miles and Sullivan Heights about 4 miles. Jaguar Land Rover's Whitley site is about 2 miles from Humber Hub too, which makes the house a sensible base for teams working south of the city.
