Whitley, a suburb in the south of Coventry whose name is said to mean the white meadow, is the headquarters of Jaguar Land Rover. JLR is one of the largest car employers in the United Kingdom, with about 33,000 people. It designs, develops, builds and sells cars under the Jaguar and Land Rover names.

The Whitley plant is an engineering and development site as well as the company's head office. It was once the Jaguar Cars head office. The ground has a long engineering story: it was a First World War airfield, then an aircraft factory and later a missile factory, before Jaguar acquired it from Peugeot in the 1980s.

Whitley is one of three JLR research and development centres in the UK, alongside the Gaydon Centre in Warwickshire. Engineers, contractors and suppliers move between the sites, which is why a base on the south side of Coventry suits so many people working with the company.

Whitley had its own identity long before the cars. Its principal house, built in the fourteenth century, carried the name Whitley Abbey even though it was never a monastery. St James's Church, opened in 1968, serves the suburb today.
