HS2 runs through the countryside between Kenilworth and Coventry, with a tunnel under Burton Green and a viaduct at Balsall Common. Our nearest home is about 7 miles away.
HS2 Phase One passes through rural land between Kenilworth and Coventry before crossing the A46 into the West Midlands. Further west, Birmingham Interchange station is being built on the outskirts of Solihull, close to the M42, M6, M6 Toll and A45, which the line crosses on viaducts.
The biggest structure near Coventry is the Burton Green tunnel, about 700 metres long and 16 metres wide, a twin box with an internal wall separating trains heading north to Birmingham from those heading south to Old Oak Common and Euston. It carries the line beneath the village of Burton Green, on the city's south-western edge.
HS2 has reported the tunnel structurally complete, after a team of about 150 people installed the final roof segment. Over it goes a green roof about 500 metres long, with native trees and shrubs planted around it. The Kenilworth Greenway is to be reinstated on top as a route from Balsall Common to Kenilworth for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
A few miles north-west, HS2 is also being built on the edge of Balsall Common, including the 425-metre Balsall Common Viaduct. Together these sites keep site teams, engineers and specialist contractors working on the stretch between Coventry and Solihull.
Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 7 miles by road from the Burton Green tunnel, Humber Hub about 8 miles and Sullivan Heights about 9 miles. Balsall Common is about 8 miles from the nearest home. All four are whole houses with free parking, a kitchen and a washing machine, so a crew can live properly for the length of a package of work.
