The area

About Stoke

Stoke is a residential part of Coventry to the east of the city centre, divided for council purposes into two wards, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke. Stoke Aldermoor lies to its south and Wyken sits between Stoke and Walsgrave on the north-east side.

The Lower Stoke side runs up towards the ring road and takes in Coventry University's campus and Far Gosford Street. The university gained its university status in 1992 but traces its roots to the Coventry School of Design of 1843. Its campus covers 33 acres, the Frederick Lanchester Library opened in 2000 and its centrepiece building, The Hub, followed in August 2011. It had 29,505 students in 2024/25.

Far Gosford Street was the medieval road out of Coventry towards Leicester and London and takes its name from a goose ford over the River Sherbourne. Silk and ribbon weavers moved in during the late 18th century and the street has been a conservation area since 1992. FarGo Village, a creative quarter of cafés, street food and small shops, opened there in 2014.

That mix of university, independent food and quick access to the centre is why Stoke works for so many kinds of stay: parents visiting students, staff on placement, crews on city projects and families between homes.

Humber Hub has four bedrooms, each with its own en-suite, sleeps 10 and is about a mile by road from Coventry University. Sullivan Heights has three bedrooms, sleeps six and is about 2 miles from University Hospital Coventry. Stoke Lodge and Stoke House, next door to each other in Lower Stoke, are new-build houses with four bedrooms and two bathrooms each, sleeping nine apiece. Book all four and there is room for 34.
