About Kenilworth

Kenilworth is a market town in Warwick District, about five and a half miles south-west of Coventry and four and a half miles north of both Warwick and Leamington Spa. It sits on the Finham Brook, a tributary of the Sowe, near the very centre of the county and had 22,538 residents at the 2021 census.

Its name comes from the Old English Cynehildworð, meaning Cynehild's enclosure. Domesday records it as Chinewrde. Geoffrey de Clinton began both an Augustinian priory and the castle in 1122. The priory became an abbey in 1450 before the Dissolution closed it in the 1530s; only a few walls and a barn survive.

The castle made Kenilworth part of national history. In 1266, during the Second Barons' War, supporters of Simon de Montfort held it through a six-month siege, thought to be the longest of medieval England. While it went on, Henry III held a Parliament here that produced the Dictum of Kenilworth, the peace terms that ended the conflict.

In the Wars of the Roses the castle was a Lancastrian base where Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou spent much time. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, later enlarged it and the ruins now draw visitors from across the country, alongside the remains of the abbey next door.

Humber Hub is about 8 miles by road from Kenilworth, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 8 miles and Sullivan Heights about 10 miles. A whole house in Coventry works well for a group visiting the castle and the Warwickshire towns, with parking and a kitchen.
