About Warwick

Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire, standing on the River Avon about nine miles south of Coventry and joined on to Leamington Spa and Whitnash. Its population was estimated at 36,665 at the 2021 census.

People have lived on the Warwick hilltop since the Neolithic, when early farmers left more than 30 shallow pits of flint and pottery. Excavation at Warwick School in 2017 and 2018 found the footings of a large Roman barn from the second century and the town has been lived in without a break since the fifth century.

Its Old English name, Wæringwīc, may come from a clan name, from a word for a fortification or from a weir on the Avon. Warwick became a major fortified settlement in the early Middle Ages and Warwick Castle, its best-known survivor, is one of the region's biggest attractions.

The Great Fire of Warwick in 1694 destroyed much of the town, which was rebuilt with fine eighteenth-century buildings such as the Collegiate Church of St Mary and the Shire Hall. Medieval, Stuart and Georgian buildings now sit side by side in the centre.

Humber Hub is about 11 miles by road from Warwick, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 12 miles and Sullivan Heights about 14 miles. For a family visiting the castle or a team working across Coventry and south Warwickshire, a whole house gives everyone a bed and a kitchen.
