About Nuneaton

Nuneaton is a market town in northern Warwickshire close to the Leicestershire border. With 88,813 residents at the 2021 census it is the largest town in the county and its wider urban area, taking in Bulkington and Hartshill, is home to more than 99,000 people.

It began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement called Etone, a settlement by water, after the River Anker. Around 1155 Robert de Beaumont gave the manor to the French abbey of Fontevraud, which founded a Benedictine nunnery here and the place became Nuneaton; a document of 1272 calls it Nunne Eton.

A market charter from Henry II around 1160, confirmed in 1226, made Nuneaton the market town for its villages. The nunnery closed in 1539 at the Dissolution and part of its church was later rebuilt. The Battle of Bosworth of 1485 was fought about five miles to the north-west, over the Leicestershire border.

Ribbon weaving and coal mining turned it into an industrial town. The novelist George Eliot was born on the Arbury estate just outside it in 1819 and spent much of her early life here; her Scenes of Clerical Life is set in Nuneaton and the George Eliot Hospital and a statue in the centre bear her name.
