Hinckley is a market town in south-west Leicestershire, the county's third largest settlement after Leicester and Loughborough. It lies about halfway between Leicester and Coventry, close to Nuneaton and Watling Street on the Warwickshire border and runs into Burbage to the south.
Archaeologists found evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British settlement near Coventry Road and Watling Street in 2000. The name is Anglo-Saxon, Hinck being a personal name and ley a clearing in a wood. By Domesday it was a large village and a market was first recorded in 1311.
Traces of an Anglo-Saxon church survive in a sundial on the chancel buttress of the parish church. The town is about four miles south of the likely site of the Battle of Bosworth of 1485, where Henry Tudor defeated Richard III.
In the seventeenth century Hinckley developed a hosiery trade making stockings and it was caught between rival garrisons in the Civil War, briefly occupied by Royalist troops in March 1644 before Parliamentarians drove them out.
