About Bedworth

Bedworth is a market town in the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth, five miles north of Coventry and three miles south of Nuneaton, with 31,090 residents at the 2021 census. Locals say it as Beduth, while almost everyone else says Bedworth.

Its name comes from the Old English Bedaworð, meaning Beda's enclosure. Domesday records it as Bedeword. The Black Death hit hard: by 1590 the town had just 14 families. Coal brought it back and by 1730 it had 260 houses.

Its position gave it an unusual religious history. The Five Mile Act of 1665 banned Nonconformist worship within five miles of a corporate town such as Coventry and Bedworth stood exactly that far away. Julius Saunders founded the Old Meeting congregation just north of the five-mile post in 1686 and a Presbyterian chapel of 1726 still stands, restored in 2012.

Coal mining and ribbon weaving, brought by French Huguenots in the eighteenth century, made Bedworth industrial. Mining peaked in 1939 with 20 pits producing more than 5.8 million tons; the last, Newdigate Colliery, closed in 1982 and Coventry Colliery on the edge of town in 1991.

Sullivan Heights is about 5 miles by road from Bedworth, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 6 miles and Humber Hub about 6 miles. All four are whole houses with parking, a kitchen and laundry, which suits longer stays for work.
