Mary Ann Evans, who wrote as George Eliot, was born in 1819 on a farm on the Arbury Estate just outside the town and her Scenes of Clerical Life is set here. Her statue stands in the town centre, the museum and art gallery in Riversley Park has a display on her life and her family home, Griff House, is now a restaurant and hotel on the A444.
The Abbey Theatre, run entirely by volunteers, seats 250 and stages touring shows, opera, ballet, musicals and pantomime. The Nuneaton Community Carnival began in October 1930 as a fundraiser for the old Nuneaton General Hospital and still fills the town with floats and music.
