The project

About George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton

George Eliot Hospital, on the outskirts of Nuneaton, is the single-site hospital of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust. It opened in 1948 and serves more than 300,000 people across north Warwickshire, south-west Leicestershire and north Coventry, with emergency, maternity, surgical and medical services.

It is named after the novelist George Eliot, who was born near Nuneaton. Many of its wards take their names from her characters, among them Felix Holt, Adam Bede and Dolly Winthrop.

The hospital took over Nuneaton's accident and emergency service in July 1993 when the Manor Hospital closed. The Queen visited in December 1994 and unveiled a bust of herself that stands in the main entrance. The George Eliot Hospital Training and Education Centre opened in July 2005.

In 2006 a report suggested moving some of its services to the new University Hospital Coventry, which prompted a local campaign that fought off the ward closures. The trust also runs community services across Coventry, Warwickshire and Leicestershire, including sexual health and community dentistry for the whole of Warwickshire.

Sullivan Heights is about 8 miles by road from the hospital, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 9 miles and Humber Hub about 9 miles. Colleagues on the same rotation can share a house, each with a bedroom of their own.
