About Hospital of St Cross, Rugby

The Hospital of St Cross stands on Barby Road on the southern edge of Rugby, above the slope down to the Sow Brook valley. It is run by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, the same trust as University Hospital Coventry.

It was founded by Richard Henry Wood, a stockbroker who had lived in Rugby for 21 years, together with his wife Elizabeth. They gave the land and the money to replace an older nursing home in Castle Street. Named after the Hospital of St Cross in Winchester, it opened in July 1884 with 31 beds and three nurses.

New wings followed in 1899, 1907 and 1929. The hospital joined the NHS in 1948 and took on the services of St Luke's Hospital in 1993. A rehabilitation centre opened in 2014 and the Maple Unit, a £1 million haematology and oncology centre, in 2021.

Today it has 110 beds and six operating theatres that specialise in elective surgery, with an urgent treatment centre for minor injuries and illnesses open 24 hours a day, every day. The nearest full accident and emergency department is at University Hospital Coventry.

Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 11 miles by road from the hospital, Sullivan Heights about 12 miles and Humber Hub about 13 miles. Staff who split their week between Rugby and University Hospital Coventry have both sites within reach of any of our four houses.
