About Hillmorton

Hillmorton is a suburb of Rugby about two miles south-east of the town centre, forming much of the eastern half of the town and a ward of its own. It was a village until it was taken into Rugby in 1932 and the Paddox estate to its west is a separate ward.

People have lived here for a very long time. Digs near Ashlawn Road in 2017 found Bronze Age settlement from about 1000 to 500 BC and plenty from the Roman period, including pottery and the remains of kilns.

The village grew from two settlements: Hull on the high ground and Morton on the lower ground to the north, where the church of St John the Baptist stands and the canal runs through.

Before 1066 Morton was divided between Waltheof, Viking, Grimkel and Swein; after the Conquest those portions passed to the Count of Meulan, Richard the Forester and Hugh de Grandmesnil. In the twelfth century the local hundreds were combined, which placed Hillmorton in the Rugby division.

Humber Hub, in Lower Stoke on the east side of Coventry, is about 15 miles by road from Hillmorton, the furthest of the places this site covers. It still suits a crew that wants a whole house, parking and a kitchen within reach of Rugby.
