About Bilton

Bilton is a suburb about a mile and a half south-west of Rugby town centre and a ward of the borough, with 6,544 residents at the 2021 census. It makes up much of the western half of the town, though many people who live there still call it a village.

The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon Beolatun, meaning Beola's town. Domesday records it as both Beltone and Bentone. The church of St Mark dates from the mid-fourteenth century, was enlarged and restored in 1873 and is Grade II* listed.

Rugby's growth wrapped around Bilton in the early twentieth century. When Rugby became a municipal borough in 1932 the parish was abolished, with most of it joining the borough and the rest going to Dunchurch.

Two large estates followed in the 1960s: the Admirals Estate, with streets named after Royal Navy admirals and the Woodlands Estate, laid out in 1964 with names linked to Shakespeare for the four-hundredth anniversary of his birth. The old centre survives, with the remains of an ancient stone cross on the green and Bilton Hall, Grade I listed, whose oldest parts date from 1623.

Humber Hub is about 11 miles by road from Bilton, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 11 miles and Sullivan Heights about 13 miles. For teams working on the west side of Rugby, Humber Hub is the nearest house.
