Prologis Park Ryton fills the old Ryton car factory south-east of Coventry, where Rootes, Chrysler and Peugeot built cars for more than sixty years.
Prologis Park Ryton is a manufacturing and logistics park on the edge of Ryton-on-Dunsmore, south-east of Coventry, on the site of the former Ryton car factory between the A45 and the A423. Prologis describes it as one of the most sought-after manufacturing and logistics locations in the UK, at the heart of the motorway network.
The Rootes Group built the factory in 1940 to make aircraft engines for the war and made it its headquarters afterwards. Chrysler took the company over in stages in the 1960s and in 1978 sold the plant to Peugeot's parent PSA for a symbolic US$1, after which it built Talbots and then Peugeots.
Peugeot built the 309, the 405, the 306 and finally the 206 at Ryton; the millionth 206 left the line in February 2004. PSA then chose to close the plant and car making ended in the winter of 2006 to 2007, with the loss of more than 2,000 jobs.
Prologis has since turned the works into distribution and light industrial space. The occupiers it shows include Jaguar, the Jaguar Heritage Trust, DHL and CEVA Logistics. Park services run from ANPR-controlled entrances and private roads to gritting in winter.
Two JLR businesses work from the park, off Oxford Road. At Classic Works, JLR Classic builds, restores, converts, sells and services older Jaguars and Land Rovers. On the same road the SV Technical Centre is JLR's flagship site for SV Bespoke paint and personalisation, the finishing work behind its most individual cars.
Humber Hub is about 3 miles by road from the park, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 4 miles and Sullivan Heights about 5 miles. Ryton Pools Country Park, about a mile south-west of the village, is close by for an evening walk after a shift.
