Styvechale, often spelt Stivichall and said Sty-chull, is the leafy south Coventry suburb next to the War Memorial Park.
Stivichall, or Styvechale, is a mainly residential suburb in the south of Coventry, straddling the Leamington Road. Its pronunciation is settled, rhyming roughly with Sty-chull, while its spelling has been argued over for generations. The name is thought to come from the Old English styfic, meaning tree stumps, with healh, a nook or corner.
To the north and north-west it borders the War Memorial Park, a Grade II listed park and garden that separates it from Earlsdon. Cheylesmore runs into it to the north-east, Whitley Common lies to the east and the A45 forms the boundary with Finham and Green Lane to the south. The small district of Fenside forms its south-east corner.
The manor belonged to the Gregory family from the sixteenth century. In 1919 Coventry Corporation bought the land, using part of it to create the War Memorial Park. The rest was built on by the 1970s. While the Gregorys owned the estate, the roads to Leamington and Kenilworth that meet here carried a toll of a penny a horse and sixpence a vehicle; the toll house stood until 1964.
The western side, known locally as Styvechale Grange, was laid out in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Coventry's population was climbing towards its 1971 peak of about 340,000. The old civil parish had 76 residents in 1931 and was absorbed into Coventry and Baginton the following year.
