About Fillongley

Fillongley, recorded as Fillungeleye in 1135, is a village and civil parish in North Warwickshire, at the crossroads of the B4102 from Solihull to Nuneaton and the B4098 from Coventry to Tamworth. It is about six and a half miles north-west of Coventry and had 1,569 residents at the 2021 census.

It is said to be farther from the sea than any other settlement in Great Britain, about 75 miles from the nearest coast.

Medieval Fillongley had two castles, which may not have stood at the same time and neither of which survived into the sixteenth century. The earlier was a ring earthwork from King Stephen's reign. The later was probably a fortified manor house of the de Hastings family; John Hastings, Baron Bergavenny, was licensed to fortify his manor and town of Fillongley in 1301 and is buried at Greyfriars in Coventry.

The parish church of St Mary and All Saints dates from the twelfth century, with a later bell tower and fourteenth-century stained glass. Isaac Pearson, uncle of the novelist George Eliot, is buried in the churchyard.

Sullivan Heights is about 8 miles by road from Fillongley, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 8 miles and Humber Hub about 8 miles. All four are whole houses with parking and a kitchen, a good base for exploring the villages north of Coventry.
