Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal, known as DIRFT, is a rail and road freight terminal with a warehousing estate in Northamptonshire, where the M1 meets the A5 and the A428. It lies about four miles east of Rugby and six miles north of Daventry. Prologis, which owns it, calls it the UK's premier logistics park.
The first phase opened on 27 May 1997 and the Princess Royal opened it officially that November. It was one of the earliest road and rail terminals built after the Channel Tunnel, a regional hub for freight to and from the Port of Felixstowe and the tunnel. Its first warehouse, of 475,000 square feet, was run for the haulier Eddie Stobart.
Severn Trent developed the original site of about 300 acres in the 1990s and sold its holding to Prologis in 2006. An extension, DIRFT II, gained planning permission in 2005 with every building connected to the railway; Tesco was its first occupier, with a distribution centre completed in late 2011.
Prologis now lists three on-site rail freight terminals with access to the West Coast Main Line, direct access to junction 18 of the M1 and three connections to the A5. It is marketing plots from 100,000 to 750,000 square feet and planning DIRFT IV, around 5.5 million square feet east of the M1, which the government treats as a nationally significant project. The Hub at DIRFT gives people working on the park a place to learn, meet and relax at any hour.
Sullivan Heights is about 19 miles by road from DIRFT, Humber Hub about 19 miles and Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 19 miles. For warehouse fit-out, rail terminal crews and project teams on the expansion, every house gives a bed each, free parking and a pro-forma invoice for the company.
