About Lutterworth

Lutterworth is a market town in the Harborough district of south Leicestershire, close to the point where Leicestershire meets Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. It lies about six and a half miles north of Rugby and 12 miles south of Leicester, with 10,833 people at the 2021 census.

The name is Anglo-Saxon and probably means an enclosure on the River Hlūtre, likely an old name for the River Swift, from a word meaning clear or bright. Lutterworth appears in Domesday and King John granted it a market charter in 1214.

Its most famous rector was John Wycliffe, who held the parish from 1374 to 1384 and is traditionally believed to have produced the first translation of the Bible from Latin into English while he was here. St Mary's Church, first built in the thirteenth century, still has fifteenth-century wall paintings that have been uncovered and restored.

In the coaching era the town was a stopping place on the road from Leicester to Oxford and London. Several of its old coaching inns remain. In the late 1930s and 1940s Sir Frank Whittle developed some of the world's first jet engines at the British Thomson-Houston works here; a replica of his Gloster E.28/39 stands on a roundabout just south of the town.

Today Lutterworth sits beside junction 20 of the M1, with the M6 a few miles to the south. Its biggest neighbour is Magna Park, the logistics park built on the former RAF Bitteswell airfield. Sullivan Heights, in Upper Stoke on the north-east side of Coventry, is about 15 miles by road from the town and Humber Hub about 17 miles.
