Lutterworth's inns tell its history. The 17th-century building on the corner of George Street and Leicester Road was the Ram Inn, renamed the Cavalier in the early 1970s; legend links the new name to royalist soldiers who sheltered in the town after the Battle of Naseby in 1645. The thatched Shambles, once an abattoir and butcher's, has been a pub again since 1982.

Engineering enthusiasts come for Sir Frank Whittle. A replica of his Gloster E.28/39 stands on a roundabout south of the town and the museum shows documents from his work on the jet engine. Stanford Hall, a country house near Lutterworth, is close by for a wedding or a family celebration.

Sullivan Heights is about 15 miles by road from Lutterworth, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 16 miles and Humber Hub about 17 miles. Humber Hub sleeps 10, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House nine each next door to one another and Sullivan Heights six.

A family gathering or a club weekend can share one or two kitchens and park free at each house. The rules are simple: no parties or events, no smoking inside and no pets.

Lutterworth has held a market since King John granted its charter in 1214.

For engineering fans the trip carries on in Coventry: the Transport Museum shows Thrust2 and ThrustSSC, the British jet cars that broke the land speed record in 1983 and 1997.
