About Clifton upon Dunsmore and Houlton

Clifton upon Dunsmore is a village and civil parish on the north-eastern edge of Rugby, about two miles from the town centre. It is the most easterly village in Warwickshire and in the whole West Midlands region.

The parish takes in Houlton, the new development south of the old village, which is why its population leapt from 1,304 in 2011 to 2,991 in 2021. That growth has made the area one of the busiest construction sites in Warwickshire.

The village stands on a steep hill rising to 400 feet, with the Oxford Canal at its foot to the south-west and the River Avon to the north. About a mile and a quarter north-east, Watling Street crosses the Avon at Dow Bridge, where Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire meet.

The Roman town of Tripontium lay about a mile and a half to the north and the area has been suggested as a possible site of Boudica's defeat. The name joins the Old English cliffe, rocky ground, with Dunsmore. Before the Conquest the land belonged to Alwyn, Sheriff of Warwick, who gave it to Coventry Priory, whose monks probably built the church of St Mary.
