About Foleshill

Foleshill is a suburb in the north of Coventry, with Longford, Courthouse Green and Rowley Green to its north and Keresley to the west. The ward had 22,478 residents at the 2021 census.

It began as a village and parish outside the city. Domesday Book recorded it in 1086, alongside Ansty, as part of the estate once held by Lady Godiva. The name is thought to mean 'hill of the folk'. The parish was absorbed into Coventry and Bedworth in 1932.

The Coventry Canal and the railway to Nuneaton turned Foleshill into an industrial district, with ordnance works, silk ribbon weaving at J&J Cash and several brickworks. Courtaulds opened its factory here in July 1905 and grew into a world leader in artificial fibres; its chimney, put up in 1924, stood 365 feet tall and was said to be the tallest in England. Riley Cars were based in Foleshill from 1916 to 1948 and Jaguar had a factory in the area in the 1930s and 1940s.

The red-brick office building of Challenge, an early cycle and car maker, can still be seen on Foleshill Road. Tower Court, once part of the Courtaulds works, is now offices.

Sullivan Heights, in Upper Stoke, is about 2 miles by road from Foleshill. It sleeps six across three bedrooms, with a full kitchen, laundry and free parking on the street. The Coventry Building Society Arena is about 3 miles from the house.
