About Radford

Radford is a suburb and council ward about a mile and a half north of Coventry city centre, covering just over 300 hectares between Holbrooks, Foleshill and the inner city. It is made up of four neighbourhoods: Radford Diamond, East Radford, West Radford and Canal Basin. Radford Diamond lies about a mile north-west of the centre, with the Coventry to Nuneaton railway along its southern edge, while West Radford, about two miles out, is home to some 3,800 people.

At the end of the 19th century Radford changed from open country into one of the city's main manufacturing districts, helped by the Coventry Canal and the railway, which had a stop at Daimler Halt on Sandy Lane.

Its biggest claim to fame is the birth of the British motor industry. The Great Horseless Carriage Company set up in 1896 in Motor Mills, a converted cotton mill beside the canal. It soon took the name Daimler. Shortly before the First World War the company moved to a new factory at the junction of Lydgate Road and Sandy Lane.

The old Sandy Lane power station nearby has since been turned into Electric Wharf, a development of homes and business space.

Sullivan Heights is about 3 miles by road from Radford, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 3 miles and Humber Hub about 4 miles. All four houses include bills, Wi-Fi and free parking. The Coventry Building Society Arena is about 3 miles from Sullivan Heights.
