About Exhall

Exhall is a suburban village in the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth, part of the urban area that joins Coventry to Bedworth. It runs into Coventry's Longford district and the village of Hawkesbury and is sometimes called Exhall near Coventry to tell it apart from the Exhall near Alcester.

The name joins the Brythonic egluis, a church, with the Old English halh, a valley, because the parish church of St Giles stands in the valley of the Breach Brook. The nave and chancel appear to date from the thirteenth century, with the tower added in the fourteenth.

The old parish never had a clear centre. It was a scatter of hamlets from Black Bank in Bedworth to the north of Holbrooks in Coventry, among them Hayes Green, Exhall Hall Green, Wagon Overthrow, Little Bayton, Ash Green, Neal's Green and Newland. Domesday does not name it, though it probably formed part of Lady Godiva's lands in Ansty and Foleshill.

Coal mines are recorded from the early seventeenth century. The Industrial Revolution brought more mining and brick making and with them rows of small workers' houses along Black Bank, in Ash Green and at Goodyers End. By 1868 ribbon making was the main industry, as it was in Coventry and Nuneaton.

Sullivan Heights is about 4 miles by road from Exhall, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 5 miles and Humber Hub about 5 miles. Sullivan Heights is also about 3 miles from the Coventry Building Society Arena, on the way.
