Contract work in and around Daventry

Daventry's industry is young. The town stayed small until the bearing maker British Timken opened a large factory in 1955; it closed in 1993, though the distribution centre ran until 2000. The first stretch of the M1, opened nearby, gave the town a direct motorway link to London.

From 1961 Daventry took overspill from Birmingham. Birmingham City Council bought nearly 1,000 acres for homes and industrial estates while Northamptonshire provided roads and schools. By 1972 more than 1,000 families had arrived along with many new industries and modern estates now ring the old town centre.

Freight is the big employer nearby. DIRFT, about six miles north at junction 18 of the M1, has three rail freight terminals on the West Coast Main Line and is planning DIRFT IV, around 5.5 million square feet more on land east of the motorway.

Daventry has M1 junctions 16 and 18 on either side, with the A45 towards Northampton in one direction and Rugby and Coventry in the other. The A361 runs south-west to junction 11 of the M40 at Banbury. The nearest station is Long Buckby, about four miles north-east.

Humber Hub is about 18 miles by road from Daventry, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 19 miles and Sullivan Heights about 21 miles. For a crew on a warehouse build or rail terminal work, a whole house gives a bed each and parking for the vans.
