About Binley

Binley is a suburb on the eastern edge of Coventry. Willenhall lies to the south across the Coventry to Rugby railway, Stoke Aldermoor to the west beyond Allard Way and the Warwickshire village of Binley Woods to the east. Copsewood completes the circle, leading on to Wyken and Stoke. The Binley and Willenhall ward had 17,774 residents at the 2021 census.

The village appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Most of the old civil parish joined the City of Coventry in 1932, with part going to Combe Fields and the remainder renamed Binley Woods. The church of St Bartholomew was built in 1773 at the expense of William Craven, the sixth Baron Craven. It is now Grade I listed.

Coal shaped the twentieth century here. Binley Colliery opened in 1908 and at one point was the most efficient pit in the Warwickshire coalfield. It was modernised in the 1950s before closing in 1963. The Herald Way industrial estate now covers the site, while miners' cottages still line Willenhall Lane and St James Lane.

Building carried on long after the pit. Ernesford Grange went up beside Binley in the early 1970s, with closes named after well-known miners. A further estate in the 1990s and 2000s, sometimes called North Binley, roughly doubled the suburb and reaches Brinklow Road near Coombe Country Park. For many people online, Binley also means one thing: the Binley Mega Chippy.
