Atherstone had 9,212 people at the 2021 census and 11,259 counting Mancetter, which now runs into it on the south-east side but remains a separate parish. Witherley lies across the River Anker in Leicestershire.

Primary schools include Outwoods Primary School, Racemeadow Primary Academy and St Benedict's Catholic Primary Academy; the Queen Elizabeth Academy is the town's state secondary. Atherstone has its own town council of 15 councillors in three wards, alongside the borough and county councils.

For commuting, the hourly trains run south to London and north to Crewe via Stafford. Coventry is 13 miles to the south.

In the Tudor period the town encouraged merchants with burgage plots, strips of land along Watling Street that gave their holders special privileges.
