About Wyken

Wyken is a suburb on the east side of Coventry, between Stoke and Walsgrave and about three miles east-north-east of the city centre. It is a large ward that stretches as far as Binley, with 16,818 residents at the 2011 census. Most of its homes are terraced houses. The old parish lay along the River Sowe and was mostly flat, apart from Wyken Heath and Wyken Knob near Stoke Heath. Since 1974 Wyken has been part of the Coventry North East constituency.

Wyken was a parish of its own until 1932, when it was merged into Coventry; it had 3,729 people at the 1931 census. Its oldest building, St Mary Magdalene's Church in Wyken Croft, is regarded as the oldest surviving church in Coventry, with origins going back about 900 years. Local tradition also claims Caludon Castle, of which one wall still stands, as the birthplace of St George.

Caludon Castle School and Lyng Hall School are the area's secondary schools. The MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow grew up in Wyken.

For visitors the appeal is practical: Wyken is settled and residential, with University Hospital Coventry next door in Walsgrave.
