About Spon End

Spon End is a suburb just west of Coventry city centre, with Earlsdon and Chapelfields as its other neighbours. It was once joined to the centre by Spon Street, until the inner ring road cut that street in two.

The main road through Spon End carries some of the city's better-known buildings. The Butts Park Arena opened in 2004 as the home of Coventry Rugby Football Club and also hosts Coventry United football teams on an all-weather pitch. Next door, the headquarters of Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, sits between the arena and a hotel.

That hotel occupies the former City College Coventry building, long known as The Butts, when it was Coventry Technical College. The same building houses the Albany Theatre, a community arts centre.

Water and railways frame the area. The Coventry to Nuneaton line crosses the River Sherbourne on Spon End Viaduct, after which the river passes under Spon Bridge, through a post-war housing estate and under Vignoles Bridge before disappearing into a culvert at the edge of the centre.

Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 3 miles by road from Spon End, Humber Hub about 3 miles and Sullivan Heights about 3 miles. For a rugby weekend, a theatre trip or business with Ofqual, any of our four houses gives a group its own space on the other side of the city centre.
