About Earlsdon

Earlsdon is a residential suburb about a mile south-west of Coventry city centre, built around its own high street, Earlsdon Street, where most of the shops, restaurants and pubs are. It has rugby, golf and tennis clubs, one of the largest libraries outside the city centre and two theatres, the Albany Theatre and the Criterion Theatre.

The suburb grew on watch-making in the mid-19th century, a trade still marked by the clock on the roundabout at the foot of the high street. It became part of Coventry in 1890. Albany Road opened in 1897 and by 1918 Earlsdon was built up much as it is today. Sir Frank Whittle, the pioneer of the jet engine, was born here in a terraced house on Newcombe Road, which carries a small plaque.

To the south lies the War Memorial Park, about 48.5 hectares of parkland opened in July 1921 in memory of the 2,587 Coventrians killed in the First World War. Its memorial, about 90 feet high and built in 1927, is Grade II* listed and the park was added to the national register of historic parks and gardens in 2013.

Many lecturers and researchers from Coventry University and the University of Warwick live in Earlsdon and the neighbouring Wainbody ward.

Humber Hub is about 3 miles by road from Earlsdon and from the War Memorial Park. The house is also about a mile from Coventry University and about 6 miles from the University of Warwick, so it works well for visiting academics and for families at graduation time.
