Stays near Gibbet Hill and Warwick Medical School

Gibbet Hill is the name of the University of Warwick's southern campus and of the small district around it in the south of Coventry. The campus houses the School of Life Sciences, Warwick Medical School and the university's Estates Office, with a cafe of its own.

It lies south-east of the main campus, about a kilometre away by a path through Tocil Wood or along Gibbet Hill Road. For the first few years of the university's life, from the 1960s, this site was the whole campus: one central building held offices and tutorial rooms for every department, two lecture theatres and the original library.

Those lecture theatres were called ELT1 and ELT2, for East Site, until a 1997 redevelopment renamed them GLT1 and GLT2. In 1968 the university won a £50,000 grant from the Nuffield Foundation to build five houses and two flats for mathematicians visiting conferences. Those buildings are now Grade II* listed.

Beyond the campus, Gibbet Hill Road is lined with large detached houses, many built before 1930. The university once also used Wainbody House on Stoneleigh Road, which it sold in 2004 for conversion into flats.

Humber Hub is about 5 miles by road from Gibbet Hill, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 6 miles and Sullivan Heights about 6 miles. For a visiting academic, a medical school placement or a family visit, a whole house gives room to work and cook rather than a single hotel room.
