Allesley keeps the feel of a village on the western edge of Coventry, with a medieval church on its ridge and the old Holyhead road running through it.

The area

About Allesley

Allesley sits about three and a half miles west-northwest of Coventry city centre, at the eastern end of the Meriden Gap. Its parish covers far more ground than the village, taking in the old Arden hamlets of Pinketts Booth, Pickford, Hawkes End and Brownshill Green. The 2021 census counted 907 people in the parish itself, while Allesley, Allesley Park and Allesley Green together are home to around 8,000.

The village grew up around All Saints Church, which dates from about 1140 and was rebuilt in 1863. Its spire still marks the skyline above a conservation area laid out on a low ridge between the River Sherbourne and the Pickford Brook. Next door, The Elms has been a private house, an eye hospital and a children's convalescent home before its current life as a pub and restaurant.

Birmingham Road through Allesley was part of Thomas Telford's Holyhead turnpike, built between 1821 and 1824. A toll house at the junction with Allesley Old Road was unusual in collecting on two roads at once; tolls ended in 1871 and the building was pulled down in the 1930s.

For much of the twentieth century this was Jaguar country. The main Jaguar assembly plant and its national showroom stood at Browns Lane until 1998. The suburbs grew up alongside: Allesley Park between the 1950s and the 1970s and Allesley Green in the late 1980s, both just south of the old village.

Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 5 miles by road from Allesley, Humber Hub about 5 miles and Sullivan Heights about 6 miles. All four houses are on the east side of Coventry, with the city centre between them and Allesley, which suits anyone who wants a whole house with parking and a kitchen while working across the west of the city.
