A few nights for a trip that takes in Northampton and Coventry, from a whole house with self check-in in Stoke, Coventry.
Northampton's Market Square is one of the largest in Britain and dates from 1235, when Henry III moved trading out of All Saints churchyard; it was dug up and redesigned in 2024. St Giles Street was named Best British High Street in 2015.
Abington Street, the main shopping street, was partly pedestrianised in 1984. Cinemas include Vue at Sol Central and the Odeon at Sixfields. One of the shelters from the old town tramway, which ran from 1881 to 1934, survives at Racecourse Park.
Our houses are in Coventry, about 32 miles from Northampton, which suits a short stay that is mostly about the West Midlands: a match, a concert or a family visit in the city.
Each is let whole with the beds made and a kitchen for breakfast, with check-in from 4pm and check-out by 10am.
London Northwestern trains from the station reach Euston, Birmingham and Crewe. The Northampton arm of the Grand Union Canal, popular with anglers and narrowboaters, meets the Nene in the town, near the meadows by Delapré Abbey where Henry VI was captured in 1460.
Further east a stretch of Abington Street pedestrianised in 1995 was opened to traffic again in 2014. The Market Square leads straight on to it.
