About Cheylesmore

Cheylesmore is one of Coventry's largest suburbs, in the southern half of the city. It runs from the edge of the city centre down to Whitley and Stivichall, with Earlsdon to the north. It had 15,650 residents at the 2021 census. Locals tend to say 'Charlesmore'. Its two shopping parades, on Daventry Road and at Quinton Park, look over a small park and Quinton Pool.

The suburb is named after Cheylesmore Manor. Edward, the Black Prince, used the manor as a hunting lodge and Henry VI also lived there. The house was demolished in 1955, but its gatehouse, parts of which date from around 1250, survives as a Grade II* listed building and has been Coventry's register office since 1965.

Motoring shaped the 20th-century suburb. Rolls-Royce, Armstrong Siddeley, Coventry Climax and the Swift Motor Company all worked around Quinton Road and Mile Lane. Houses went up so fast in the 1930s that builders struggled to keep pace. Workers could walk to the factories and go home for lunch. The restored front of the Quinton Works, a cycle factory of 1890 later taken over by Swift, now forms part of a hotel. Coventry University has a technology park nearby.

Humber Hub is the nearest of our houses, about 2 miles by road. With four en-suite bedrooms and free off-road parking, it suits a visiting team or a family who want one house rather than a row of hotel rooms.
