Dunchurch is the old coaching village south-west of Rugby where the Gunpowder Plotters waited for news in 1605.
Dunchurch is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Rugby, about two and a half miles south-west of central Rugby. With the hamlet of Toft, the parish had 4,123 residents at the 2021 census, up from 2,938 ten years earlier.
Domesday records a settlement called Don Cerce. The heart of the village is a conservation area with timber-framed buildings from the fifteenth century, some still thatched.
Standing where the coaching roads from London to Birmingham and from Oxford to Leicester crossed, Dunchurch was for centuries an important staging post, with 27 coaching inns at one time. The Dun Cow and The Green Man still trade.
In 1605 the Gunpowder Plotters, gathered by Sir Everard Digby, waited at the Lion Inn, now a private house called Guy Fawkes House, for news from London; had the plot succeeded they planned to seize Princess Elizabeth from Coombe Abbey. The young Victoria, the Duke of Wellington and Robert Stephenson, who stayed while building the Kilsby Tunnel, have all stayed in the village too.
