About Courthouse Green

Courthouse Green is a suburb in the north of Coventry, bordered by Bell Green to the north-west, Stoke Heath to the south, Wyken to the east and Foleshill to the south-east. Its tallest building is Longfield House on Bell Green Road, a 16-storey block of 129 flats completed in 1967.

The name has medieval roots. The Victoria County History notes that Foleshill was subject to the court of the manor of Coventry, or Cheylesmore, which in the Middle Ages was sometimes held in the open air. Courthouse Green was counted with its neighbours in the parish survey of 1730 and after the Second World War a smaller council estate of 556 homes was built here.

Industry made its name. Morris Engines bought a 45-acre site in 1927 and by the late 1930s the works were turning out more than 3,000 engines a week. Through the war it made engines for fire pumps, ambulances, military vehicles, lifeboats and tanks. In the 1960s the Mini Cooper S version of the A-Series engine was developed and built here.

Today the A444 runs past a cluster of shops, a gym and the Gallagher Retail Park and the city's north park and ride site is beside them.

Sullivan Heights is under a mile by road from Courthouse Green, Stoke Lodge and Stoke House about 3 miles and Humber Hub about 3 miles. The Coventry Building Society Arena is about 3 miles from Sullivan Heights.
