About Stoke Heath

Stoke Heath lies about a mile north-east of Coventry city centre. Courthouse Green borders it to the north, Wyken to the east, Foleshill to the west and Stoke to the south, with the A444 marking its western edge.

For centuries this was open grazing land held by the manors of Wyken and Caludon. On 3 April 1604 the Mayor and Aldermen of Coventry met Princess Elizabeth, on her way from Coombe Abbey, at 'Jabet's Ash on Stoke-green'. The area was known as Wyken Heath or Wyken Knob until a civil parish of Stoke Heath was carved out of western Wyken in 1920; it joined the city in 1928.

The suburb was built between 1900 and 1920, largely for munitions workers in the years before and during the First World War, when it also took in many Belgian refugees. By 1915 there were 689 homes, centred on a red-brick school. St Alban's Church followed in 1929, designed by Harry Bulkeley Creswell and street names such as Blackberry Lane and Little Field still recall the fields.

The Morris engine works in Blackberry Lane was the main employer for decades, making engines and munitions before closing in the early 1980s; new homes now stand on the site. The district was heavily bombed in the Blitz and the last bombs to fall on Coventry in the war landed here on 3 August 1942. More recent renewal has created the Liberty Park area.
