Long Lawford is the village on the ridge just west of Rugby, strung out along the old road to Coventry.
Long Lawford is a village and civil parish in the Rugby borough, about one and three-quarter miles west of Rugby town centre. Its population has grown quickly, from 3,180 in 2011 to 4,545 in 2021.
It sits on a ridge above the valley of the River Avon and is one of four Lawfords, alongside Church Lawford, Little Lawford and Lawford Heath. It is called Long because the village historically ran along the road between Rugby and Coventry, today the A428.
Archaeologists have found evidence of settlement going back about 2,000 years, including an Iron Age sword. Domesday names the village Lelleford, meaning the ford by the elders. By 1332 it was Longa Lalleford. The monks of Pipewell Abbey held the manor from 1160 until the Dissolution.
The Boughton family then dominated village life from Lawford Hall until the death of Sir Theodosius Boughton there in 1780, after which the hall was demolished. The Rugby to Coventry railway runs through the village and the large Cemex cement works and quarry lie immediately to the east.
Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 9 miles by road from Long Lawford, Sullivan Heights about 10 miles and Humber Hub about 11 miles. All four are on the east side of Coventry, which keeps the run along the A428 straightforward.
