Codemasters was founded in 1986 by Richard and David Darling, brothers from the town. It keeps its head office of several hundred staff in Southam and was Europe's largest privately owned computer games company until Electronic Arts bought it in February 2021.

The town counts itself part of Silicon Spa, the cluster of games studios centred on nearby Leamington Spa, which brings visiting developers, publishers and testers through on projects of weeks or months. The rolling-stock firm Vivarail was based in Southam from 2019 until it was dissolved in 2023.

From Humber Hub in Lower Stoke the run to Southam is about 12 miles. A visiting team gets one house, one set of keys and one pro-forma invoice carrying its purchase-order number, settled before arrival.

Southam was the seat of the Southam Rural District from 1894 until 1974, when it joined Stratford-on-Avon District. Since 2010 it has given its name to the Kenilworth and Southam parliamentary constituency.

For an away day or a client event, Southam's six-pitch Dallas Burston Polo Club has conference and events facilities as well as the Millstone Hare pub and restaurant.

Southam has its own town council of ten councillors from four wards, working alongside the district and county councils. After a day at the studio, Coventry's cathedral quarter is about 2 miles from Humber Hub.
