About Whoberley

Whoberley is a residential suburb about two miles west of Coventry city centre. The Whoberley ward had 15,903 residents at the 2011 census. Allesley and Allesley Park lie to the north, Lime Tree Park to the south-west, Chapelfields to the east and Mount Nod and Eastern Green to the west, with Hearsall Common to the south-east.

According to the Victoria County History of Coventry, most of historic Whoberley lay west of the Horwell stream and so belonged to Stoneleigh parish rather than the city. The Whoberley estate covered the land north of Tile Hill Lane and east of the modern bypass.

Hearsall Common once carried on westward as Whoberley Common into Stoneleigh beyond Guphill Lane. That lane, also called Whoberley Lane, formed part of the boundary between Coventry and Stoneleigh and probably took its name from the Gopyls or Gupyls, who held land in Whoberley in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

The neighbouring districts of Asthill and Horwell, mainly east of the stream, show how the city grew: the railway from Coventry to Birmingham became a borough boundary and land on its far side joined the city in the boundary extension of 1890. Whoberley filled in over the following century to become the suburb it is today.

Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 4 miles by road from Whoberley, Humber Hub about 4 miles and Sullivan Heights about 5 miles. All four are let as whole houses with parking, which suits a family or a team working in the west of the city for a few weeks.
