Shilton is a weavers' village north-east of Coventry, split by the West Coast Main Line and close to the M69.
Shilton is a village in the parish of Shilton and Barnacle, about five and a half miles north-east of Coventry on the B4065, at a crossroads with the B4029. Hinckley is the same distance to the north-east. It belongs to an outlying part of the Borough of Rugby, even though Rugby itself is more than eight miles away.
The Trent Valley railway, part of the West Coast Main Line, almost cuts the village in two. Shilton had its own station from 1847 until 1957 and the M69 runs a short distance to the north-west.
Domesday records the village as Scelftone, with eight households. The parish church of St Andrew dates from the thirteenth century and was rebuilt twice in the fourteenth and fifteenth; Sir George Gilbert Scott designed its second north aisle in 1865 and the churchyard has elaborately carved eighteenth-century gravestones.
Old cottages along the main street were once home to weavers. The village also has a Baptist chapel of 1867, a village hall and the Shilton Arms, its one remaining pub.
