Wolston is an Avon village halfway between Coventry and Rugby, with a Norman castle mound and an 1830s railway viaduct.
Wolston is a village and civil parish in the Rugby borough, roughly halfway between Rugby and Coventry, with 2,692 residents at the 2021 census. It is close to the A45 and the Fosse Way and the River Avon flows through it.
Near the river are the remains of Brandon Castle, a Norman motte and bailey. A Benedictine priory stood to the east of the village and its earthworks are now a scheduled ancient monument. Domesday records the village as Vivricetone and Vivestone.
The old parish of Wolston was large, taking in Brandon and Bretford to the north and Stretton-on-Dunsmore and Princethorpe to the south. The southern villages became a separate parish in 1696 and Brandon and Bretford in 1866.
The railway viaduct across the Avon, from the 1830s and part of the original London and Birmingham Railway, separates Wolston from Brandon. Brandon and Wolston station closed in 1960. Today the village has a primary school, a library, two pubs, a pharmacy and a doctors' surgery and its name is used by geologists for a stage of the last ice ages.
