About Henley Green

Henley Green lies next to Wood End in the north-east of the city, bordered by Deedmore Road and about a mile from Bell Green. It is part of the Henley ward and today has a mix of private and social housing.

Most of the estate was built by Wimpey around 1955, much of it from no-fines concrete, poured on site without sand so that houses could go up quickly. It was one of several estates built to house the workers arriving in Coventry during the boom in the car industry and related trades.

The Victoria County History of Coventry describes the wider Bell Green scheme, which took in Henley Green, Manor House and Wood End, as the largest of the corporation's post-war housing projects, with more than 3,500 homes. It was laid out as a partly self-contained suburb with its own shopping precinct, community buildings and tower blocks.

Some of the 1950s four-storey blocks known as Star Blocks have since been demolished and replaced with new homes, while newer red-brick houses went up in the early 1990s. Part of the open ground off Luscombe Road has been granted formal village green status.

Sullivan Heights, in Upper Stoke, is about a mile by road from Henley Green. University Hospital Coventry is about 2 miles from the house. Humber Hub, in Lower Stoke, is about 4 miles away.
