A club with a long memory
Rugby in Coventry goes back to 1874, when a group including members of Stoke Cricket Club played what could be called the city's first organised game, against Allesley Park College. The club enjoyed great success in the 1960s and 1970s, winning the RFU Knockout Cup in 1972 to 1973 and again in 1973 to 1974, with many players capped by their countries.
Coventry played at Coundon Road from 1921 until 2004, when they moved to the Butts Park Arena. Promotion from National League 1 in 2017 to 2018 brought them back to the second tier, now called Champ Rugby.
Recent seasons
Coventry have been near the top of the second tier for several years: third in 2022 to 2023 and again in 2023 to 2024, fifth in 2024 to 2025 and third in 2025 to 2026.
In December 2024, while leading the table, the club made a formal application for promotion to the Premiership. The BBC explained the hurdles: a club would have to win the division and then beat the top flight's bottom side in a two-leg play-off, as well as meet criteria on ground capacity and finances. The capacity rule asks for 10,000, but promoted sides were to be given four years to reach it. Executive chair Jon Sharp said the club would do whatever it could to bring Premiership rugby to the city.
A new name for the ground
On 21 February 2026 the club announced that the Butts Park Arena would become the Nick Newbold Stadium. Nick Newbold was a former club director and lifelong supporter, born and educated in Coventry, who worked with the club for 17 years and supported charitable work across the city, including with Coventry City's official charity and Acorns Children's Hospice.
The naming ceremony took place on 21 March 2026, during a Champ Rugby fixture against Doncaster Knights.
The stadium
The Nick Newbold Stadium stands in Spon End, close to the city centre. It holds 5,250. Its one main stand, the XL Motors Stand, seats about 3,000 and holds conference and banqueting rooms, with standing room around the pitch. The record crowd of 5,250 came for a Premiership Rugby Cup match against Leicester Tigers on 15 February 2025.
The ground also hosts Coventry United football matches and the varsity games between Coventry University and the University of Warwick. The stadium opens three hours before kick-off, tickets bought on the day cost £2 more than those bought in advance and on-site parking is £6.
Match day from Stoke
Spon End is about 3 miles by road from the nearest of our homes and the city centre about 5 minutes by car. A squad or a supporters' group can book Stoke Lodge and Stoke House together for up to 18 people, with a kitchen in each house for the post-match meal.
