Sutton Stop
Hawkesbury Junction, known as Sutton Stop after a family of nineteenth-century lock keepers, is where the Oxford Canal meets the Coventry Canal. The junction moved here from Longford in 1803. A disused 1821 engine house that once held a Newcomen steam engine still stands on the western bank.
Waterside Gardens
Off Grange Road, Taylor Wimpey's Waterside Gardens is a development of 262 two, three and four-bedroom homes alongside the canal, on the edge of Hawkesbury Village.
Daimler Wharf
Closer to the centre, the council's Daimler Wharf record covers 7 acres between Sandy Lane and the canal, with houses, apartments, workspace and the Daimler Powerhouse arts complex planned. The street has motoring history of its own: Daimler's original Sandy Lane plant was destroyed in the bombing of Coventry.
Walking the towpath
The canal begins at the basin just north of the city centre. The basin opened in 1769 and the canal runs 38 miles north to Fradley Junction, with the towpath an easy walk out from town towards Sutton Stop.
From the houses
Sullivan Heights, on the north side of the city, is about 3 miles by road from Sutton Stop and about 3 miles from Sandy Lane.
