About Hampton-in-Arden

Hampton in Arden is a village and civil parish in the Forest of Arden, in the borough of Solihull. It was part of Warwickshire until the 1974 boundary changes and lies in the Meriden Gap, the countryside between Solihull and Coventry. The parish had 1,834 residents at the 2011 census.

The centre of the village was made a conservation area in 1968 for its special architectural and historic interest.

Domesday lists it as Hantone in Coleshill Hundred, held by Geoffrey de Wirce, with 50 villagers, a priest and 16 smallholders, a mill worth 40 pence, ten acres of meadow and woodland three leagues long. The priest suggests there was already a church. William Dugdale later explained the name as coming from the Saxon hean, meaning high.

Geoffrey seems to have died without children, so his lands passed to the Crown and then, by a grant of Henry I, to Nigel de Albini, whose son Roger took the name Mowbray.

Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 11 miles by road from Hampton-in-Arden, Humber Hub about 12 miles and Sullivan Heights about 12 miles. For exhibitors or event crews at the nearby NEC, a whole house in Coventry gives each person a bed and a kitchen to come back to.
