Where it is
The station sits on the southern edge of the city centre, just outside the ring road and about 250 yards south of junction 6. It lies on the Birmingham loop of the West Coast Main Line, at the point where the lines to Nuneaton and to Leamington meet. With nearly 6.5 million passengers in 2023 to 2024, only Birmingham New Street is busier in the region.
The building itself is a piece of post-war design. It was rebuilt by British Railways and formally reopened on 1 May 1962. It has been a Grade II listed building since 1995.
Which trains call
On a normal weekday off-peak, Avanti West Coast runs two trains an hour to London Euston and two to Birmingham New Street, one of which carries on to Edinburgh or Glasgow. London Northwestern adds two an hour to Euston via Northampton and two to Birmingham New Street. CrossCountry runs hourly to Bournemouth via Leamington Spa and Reading. It also runs hourly to Manchester Piccadilly.
Local services run once an hour to Nuneaton via Bedworth and to Leamington Spa via Kenilworth. The PlusBus scheme lets you buy a train ticket and a city bus ticket together.
What is changing around it
The station is the front door to Friargate, a business district of about 37 acres where One Friargate houses the city council, Ofqual and the Financial Ombudsman Service. It is also the starting point of Coventry Very Light Rail: an 800-metre route from the station to Coventry University Technology Park is under construction, due by summer 2027.
From the station to the houses
Stoke Lodge and Stoke House are about 2 miles by road from the station, Humber Hub about 2 miles and Sullivan Heights about 3 miles. All four have free parking, so a group arriving by car and by train can meet at the house.
