Stays near Pinley, Coventry

Pinley lies in the south-east of Coventry, between Stoke and Whitley. Like Shortley and Whitley, it belonged to the ancient parish of St Michael in Coventry. The Victoria County History treats the three together.

That history places Shortley along the River Sherbourne just south of Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street and Gosford Green, divided from Pinley by a line running roughly from Shortley Road to Pinley Gardens. The railway from Stoke runs north to south through the area to meet the Coventry to Rugby line.

By the 1960s, when the history was written, most of the ground was covered by factories and modern houses, with only a few fields left. It was the edge of the city's great car and engineering belt, which took in the Humber and Hillman works in Stoke.

Open fields once ran across this side of Coventry from Gosford Green and Potters Green in the west, along Binley Road to Binley Bridge in the east and south towards Pinley, according to thirteenth-century charters. Today Pinley is a quiet residential district close to Coventry University and the Whitley employment area.

Humber Hub, in Lower Stoke, is about a mile by road from Pinley and about 2 miles from Jaguar Land Rover's Whitley site. Sullivan Heights is about 3 miles away.
